Celebrating World Autism Awareness Day 2024

Today, the Autism Coalition of Long Island (ACOLI) will join the United Nations and others from around the world in observing the 17th annual World Autism Awareness Day.

Over past years, the rate of autism diagnosis in the New York City tri-state area have risen by nearly 500%. Nationally, these numbers have also gone up, with one in every 36 children born today to be diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) within their lifetimes. This compared to just six years ago, when one in every 44 children were said to be affected.

With autism rates continuing to climb, greater research has been dedicated to understanding the underlying characteristics of ASD, while expelling previous misconceptions regarding cures in favor of a more inclusive and accepting approach.

This shift represents the changing sentiment of the neurotypical community as they embrace the concept of neurodiversity and recognize that people perceive and engage with the world in different ways. This sentiment also helps reinforce the idea that there isn’t a singular “correct” approach.

“Over the years, we’ve witnessed families of individuals diagnosed with autism stepping up to ensure a promising and fulfilling future for their loved ones. With federal and state funding typically ending once a child reaches 21, these families have had to innovate. They leverage their child’s strengths, crafting meaningful employment and housing opportunities where they can thrive and feel secure.” Diane Cahill, President of the Board at ACOLI, remarked.

The theme for this year’s World Autism Awareness Day is “Transformation: Toward a Neuro-Inclusive World for All,” if you would like to learn more about ways in which you can support the Autism Community, the United Nations will be hosting a virtual event Tuesday, April 2, 2024, from 10 a.m to 1 p.m. (EST).
